[00:58.10]Twain wrote it about boys he knew when he was growing up near a big river.

[01:41.33]2. Read Tom sawyer (Part 1)
[01:47.28] Saturday morning came and the summer world was bright,and full of life.
[01:53.53]There was a song in the heart and on the lips of every child.
[01:59.17]Every face was cheerful.
[02:02.93]Everyone could smell the sweet flowers in the air.
[02:07.66]The hill above the village was very green.
[02:12.41]  Tom appeared by a fence with a bucket of whitewash and a long brush.
[02:19.39]He looked at the fence.
[02:22.55]Wow! Ten metres of wood fence three metres high.
[02:28.11]Life to him seemed nothing but heavy work.
[02:32.79]Sighing,he began to whitewash the fence.
[02:38.25]After a while he stopped and sat down on a box.
[02:43.71]He was unhappy.
[02:46.95]Just then,Jim came running along with a water bucket and singing.

[02:59.28]had always been work that Tom hated,but now he didn't think so.

[03:41.75]My aunt told me to go get the water and not to stop and play with anybody.

[03:52.36]  "Oh,don't worry about what she said.
[03:56.43]That's the way she always talks.
[04:00.59]Give me the bucket--I won't be long. She won't ever know,"said Tom.
[04:07.54]  "Oh,I don't dare,Tom.
[04:11.40]My aunt would beat me.Indeed,she would."
[04:16.65]  Tom replied:"She never beats anybody.
[04:21.49]She scolds,but talking doesn't hurt--unless she cries.
[04:27.73]Jim,I'll give you a pretty marble."
[04:31.88]  Jim thought about the deal.
[04:35.54]The marble was not all that Tom offered.
[04:40.69]  "If you do," Tom continued,"I'll show you my hurt toe."
[04:46.33]Jim was only human--this offer he couldn't refuse.
[04:52.26]he put down his bucket,took the marble,
[04:56.93]and looked at Tom's toe with great interest.
[05:02.21]Suddenly Aunt Polly appeared.
[05:06.47]In the next moment,Jim began to cry.
[05:11.61]Then he was flying down the street with his bucket.
[05:15.98]Aunt Polly stood by the fence with a slipper in her hand.

[05:39.64]Tom laughed at Jim but only for a short while.
[05:45.50]He thought about the fun he had planned for this day.
[05:50.56]Soon the other boys would run by on all kinds of adventures.
[05:56.52]They would make fun of him for having ot work.
[06:01.25]The very thought of it burned him like fire.
[06:05.98]From his pockets,he got out his bits of toys,marbles and rubbish.
[06:13.84]Perhaps he could give these things to some of the other boys
[06:19.12]and they would do some of his work.
[06:23.06]Then he thought:No,these things would give him little playtime.
[06:30.01]He felt sad and lost all hope again.
[06:34.87]Suddenly,he got a great idea!
