[07:06.97]THE BIRTH OF A FESTIVAL
[07:15.33]You probably know that Christmas,
[07:20.48]the Spring Festival and Ramadan are important holidays in the world.
[07:27.11]But have you heard about Kwanzaa?
[07:32.55]Kwanzaa is a seven-day festival
[07:38.11]celebrating the culture and history of African Americans.
[07:44.46]The week following Christmas Day,
[07:49.32]many African-American families
[07:53.89]get together to greet the new year and think about the past.
[08:00.05]African Americans have a long history and a rich culture,
[08:06.30]but Kwanzaa is a young holiday.
[08:10.74]Kwanzaa was born in 1966,
[08:16.67]when people created a new festival so that Afriean Americans would be able
[08:24.63]to celebrate their history and culture.
[08:28.08]The people who created Kwanzaa used the word for"first fruit"in Swahili,
[08:36.62]one of the largest languages in Africa.
[08:41.38]They chose the word
[08:44.93]because there are many festivals in Africa called"first-fruit"festivals.
[08:52.09]The African first-fruit festivals had many things in common:
[08:58.57]people would get together to celebrate their harvest;
[09:04.13]they used to give thanks for their havrvests and for life;
[09:09.88]they used to honor their ancestors,celebrate their past,
[09:16.96]and the group or society they lived in.
[09:21.71]The festivals were a way to celebrate history and culture,as well as the new year.
[09:29.65]The people who created Kwanzaa
[09:34.41]liked the characteristice of the African festivals so much
[09:40.15]that they used them to write the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa.
[09:46.71]The seven principles are:
[09:50.86]* Unity.We must buikl unity of family,community and nation.
[09:59.33]* Self-determination.We have to build our own lives,
[10:06.48]think for ourselves and speak for ourselves.
[10:13.15]* Living together.
[10:16.91]We should build our community and solve our problems together.
[10:23.67]* Working together.
[10:28.04]We should bulld and support our factories and shops.
[10:33.81]* Purpose.We should remember our past and bulld our future.
[10:41.25]We should honor our ancestors.
[10:45.83]* Creativity.
[10:49.87]We must do as much as we can to make our community better and more beautiful.
[10:57.63]* Faith.We should believe in our family,our people,our teachers and our leaders.
[11:07.69]People celebrate Kwanzaa from December 26 to January
[11:15.06]1.The dates were chosen so that Kwanzaa begins the day after Christmas Day
[11:22.61]and ends on New Year's Day.
[11:27.05]This way,people who celebrate Kwanzan can enjoy the spirit of the holidays
[11:34.91]without all the commercial activities of Christmas.
