[00:00.00]N:Lesson Eight.
[00:03.29]Let's practice a couple of sounds.
[00:19.33]The first sound is sometimes a sound of pleasure,
[00:25.26]a sound we make when we feel good or when we like something:
[00:31.43]ooh. Say it."ooh."
[00:37.67]Yes.It rhymes with blue and too and you.Say those words:
[00:46.81]blue  too  you
[00:54.26]OK,now say the word "good."
[00:59.40]And now no G sound;let's drop the g and just say "ood." Again, "ood."
[01:11.86]So now we have two sounds: ooh and ood.
[01:19.31]Let's put the two sounds together,
[01:23.46]let's slide the first sound into the second sound:ooh-ood.
[01:30.72]Try it:"ooh-ood."
[01:35.40]Now a little faster,so that the two sounds form one sound:ooh-ood.
[01:43.16]Say "would."
[01:47.10]Right.We spell this word w-o-u-l-d,and we pronounce it "would."
[02:00.76]Now how about the two words you and like? Say those words: you like
[02:13.20]Now say "Would you like?" Say that: Would you like?
[02:21.95]Mm-hmm. In informal,everyday speech,we sometimes pronounce
[02:30.00]"Would you like?" as "Woodjuh like?"  Try that:"Woodjuh like?"
[02:38.93]OK.Now that phrase is only the first part,the beginning o a question;
[02:46.87]we use the phrase to make a suggestion
[02:51.31]or to offer an invitation or to ask about a preference. Listen.
[02:59.07]Would you like to go to a movie?
[03:03.01]OK. When would you like to go ?
[03:07.59]How about tonight? Would you like to go tonight?
[03:12.63]Sure.Would you like to go to the seven o'clock show?
[03:18.69]Fine. Where would you like to sit?
[03:23.26]Oh,I don't care. What would you like to see?
[03:29.32]What would you like to see?
[03:32.48]Well,I love musicals.
[03:36.92]All right,now some practice. Listen,and repeat.
[03:42.69]Would you like to go to a movie?
[03:46.46]When would you like to go?
[03:50.22]Where would you like to sit?
[03:53.77]What would you like to see?
[03:57.53]If we receive an invitation...
[04:01.50]Would you like to go to a movie?
[04:04.95]We might answer "yes," "Sure," "fine," or "OK." Or we might say...
[04:14.38]Yes,I would.I would like to go to a movie.
[04:19.55]You say it.Repeat.
[04:23.60]Yes,I would.I would like to go to a movie.
[04:30.26]I would like to go or...
[04:34.65]I'd like to go..
[04:37.81]Repeat.  I'd like  I'd like to go
[04:44.58]I'd like to go to a movie.
[04:48.42]So we use I'd like to go accept and invitation.
[04:54.79]But maybe we don't want to accept the invitation,or maybe we can't accept.
[05:01.95]We have to refuse, but in a polite way.  Listen.
[05:08.19]I'm sorry,I can't. I have other plans.
[05:14.36]I'd really like to,but I have to work late.
[05:19.71]Thanks,I'd love to go,but I really can't.
[05:25.59]Not tonight. I have an appointment.
[05:30.34]I'd like that very much,but I'm afraid I can't.
[05:35.31]Now repeat after me.
[05:38.76]would you like   would you like to
[05:44.69]yes,I would   I'd like to
[05:50.25]I'd like to,but I can't.
[05:54.30]OK,now you're going to offer some invitations.
[05:59.76]Repeat the question after me,then listen to the answer.
[06:05.43]Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?
[06:09.79]You know,I'd realy like to,but I have to work late.
[06:14.75]Would you like to go swimming this afternoon?
[06:19.32]Oh,yes.I'd love to.I'd love to go swimming.
[06:24.97]Would you like to go to a movie?
[06:28.73]Hmm...you mean,tonight? Sure.I'd like that.
[06:34.29]Would you like to play some tennis?
[06:38.16]Well,I'd like to but I don't really play tennis. Not very well.
[06:45.29]When we use would like with the question words who, what, where, and when,
[06:53.94]The pronunciations is a little difficult.
[06:58.61]Listen carefully,and repeat after me:
[07:03.05]who would   what would   where would   when would
[07:12.12]Ok.Now listen to this conversation.
[07:17.58]Hi,Martha!  Hello,George.
[07:22.54]Martha,would you like to have dinner with me?
[07:26.80]Oh...well,when?  Tonight.
[07:32.15]Tonight? I'm sorry,I can't.Not tonight.
