Finally, a piece of history revisiting. 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. He was born in 1917 into one of America's most famous political families. His grandfather was the former Boston Mayor and his father the business tycoon Joseph P. Kennedy, became US ambassador to London.

Jack, as the young JFK was known by his family, was the second son in the large fiercely Catholic Kennedy family. His mother Rose had nine children in all.

It was during his father's tenure in the British capital that the young Kennedy had his first real taste of politics when he took up duties helping out in his father's office in 1939.

He studied at Harvard. A college football injury, later exacerbated by war injuries, left him with back problems for the rest of his life. During World War Two he served as a Navy lieutenant in the Pacific. He was decorated twice by the Navy for his efforts to ensure the survival and rescue of his crew after his PT boat was cut in two by an enemy destroyer.

Riding a wave of praise for his heroics as a Navy officer protecting his men following the sinking of the PT-109, JFK won the 1947 election for Massachusetts' 11th congressional district.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1953 and, four years later, won the Pulitzer Prize in biography for his book "Profiles in Courage," a work that many are convinced was largely ghostwritten.

In 1953 Kennedy married the glamorous socialite Jacqueline Lee Bouvier. The wedding drew celebrities from across the nation and increased his own celebrity. Soon he was being mentioned as a candidate for national office.

The JFK narrative was well in place for his presidential run in 1960: a handsome, witty and athletic World War Two hero and family man who vowed to revitalise the country.

However Kennedy's Catholicism was an issue and his election a milestone in America's perception of itself as an inclusive nation. In a close race Kennedy beat Richard Nixon and became the youngest ever man to take the office of the presidency. The landmark televised debates with the Republican nominee helped seal the deal. Some 70 million Americans watched the first debate, with the telegenic Kennedy deemed the clear winner.

Televised debates would become staples of future presidential campaigns.

In Kennedy's inaugural address he spoke about the importance of handing over power to this new generation that he had come to represent, as he was the first US president born in the 20th century.

The Kennedys were a breath of fresh air in the White House, Jackie's understated glamour and the couple's cute children, all added to the sense of youthful vigour that JFK projected.

As president, Kennedy's top priority was foreign policy. There were enormous Cold War challenges from the Soviet Union and Vietnam to Cuba.

In November 1963 politics brought the 46-year-old president to Texas, a pivotal and worrisome state in his 1964 re-election plans. With first lady Jacqueline at his side, Kennedy smiled and waved at the crowds from the back seat. Just before 12:30 p.m., the motorcade slipped out of the glass and steel canyons of downtown and zigzagged toward Elm Street and a drab, seven-story brick building.

Then the shots rang out. A half-hour later, Kennedy was declared dead at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
