[00:-1.00]We'd like to share some of the positive meanings love has for us.
[00:-2.00] Love means that I know the person I love.
[00:-3.00]I'm aware of the many sides of the other person
[00:-4.00]— not just the beautiful side but also the limitations,
[00:-5.00]inconsistencies and faults.
[00:-6.00]I have an awareness of the other's feelings and thoughts,
[00:-7.00]and I experience something of the core of that person.
[00:-8.00]I can penetrate social masks and roles and see the other person on a deeper level.
[00:-9.00]Love means that I care about the welfare of the person I love.
[00:10.00]To the extent that it is genuine,my caring is not possessive,
[00:11.00]nor does it hold the other person back.
[00:12.00]On the contrary,my caring frees both of us.
[00:13.00]If I care about you,I'm concerned about your growth,
[00:14.00]and I hope you will become all that you can become.
[00:15.00]Consequently,I don't put up obstacles to
[00:16.00]what you do that enhances you as a person,
[00:17.00]even though it may result in my discomfort at times.
[00:18.00]Love means having respect for the dignity of the person I love.
[00:19.00]If I love you,I can see you as a separate person,
[00:20.00]with your own values and thoughts and feelings,
[00:21.00]and I do not insist that you surrender your identity to
[00:22.00] match an image of what I expect you to be for me.
[00:23.00]I can allow and encourage you to stand alone and to be who you are,
[00:24.00]and I avoid treating you as an object
[00:25.00]or using you primarily to satisfy my own needs.
[00:26.00]Love means having a responsibility toward the person I love.
[00:27.00]If I love you,I respond to most of your major needs as a person.
[00:28.00]This responsibility does not include my doing for you
[00:29.00]what you are capable of doing for yourself;
[00:30.00] nor does it mean that I run your life for you.
[00:31.00]It does mean acknowledging that what I am and what I do affects you,
[00:32.00]so that I am directly involved in your happiness and your suffering.
[00:33.00]A lover does have the capacity to hurt or ignore the loved one,
[00:34.00]and in this sense we see that love involves an acceptance of some responsibility
[00:35.00]for the impact my way of being has on you.
[00:36.00]Love means making a commitment to the person I love.
[00:37.00]This commitment does not mean surrendering our total selves to each other;
[00:38.00]nor does it imply that the relationship is necessarily permanent.
[00:39.00]It does involve a willingness to stay with each other in times of pain,
[00:40.00]struggle,and despair,as well as in times of calm and enjoyment.
[00:41.00]Love means trusting the person I love.
[00:42.00]If I love you,I trust that you will accept my caring
[00:43.00]and my love and that you won't deliberately hurt me.
[00:44.00]I trust that you will find me attractive,
[00:45.00]and that you won't abandon me;I trust the mutual nature of our love.
[00:46.00]If we trust each other,we are willing to be open to each other
[00:47.00]and reveal our true selves.
[00:48.00] Love can tolerate imperfection.
[00:49.00]In a love relationship there are times when I am bored,
[00:50.00]times when I may feel like giving up,
[00:51.00]times of real strain,and times I feel I can't move forward.
[00:52.00]Authentic love does not imply enduring happiness.
[00:53.00]I can stay during rough times,however,
[00:54.00]because I can remember what we had together in the past,
[00:55.00]and I can picture what we will have together in our future
[00:56.00]if we care enough to face our problems and work them through.
[00:57.00]We agree with the idea that love is a spirit that changes life.
[00:58.00] Love is a way of life that is creative and that transforms.
[00:59.00]However,love is not reserved for a perfect world.
[-1:00.00]Love is meant for our imperfect world where things go wrong.
[-1:-1.00]Love is meant to be a spirit that works in painful situations.
[-1:-2.00]Love is meant to bring meaning into life where nonsense appears to rule.
