[-1:-5.00]one of their core products is credit information,
[-1:-6.00]which isn't always accurate.
[-1:-7.00]One of the country's largest credit bureaus
[-1:-8.00]paid out a huge amount of money a few years ago
[-1:-9.00]after settling a court case filed by 19 states
[-1:10.00]claiming the company's reports were full of errors.
[-1:11.00]But the biggest information gatherer of them all
[-1:12.00]is the Department of Motor Vehicles (汽车管理部门),
[-1:13.00]or DMV,of each state,according to Garfinkel.
[-1:14.00]"The DMV is a one-stop shop for state agencies
[-1:15.00]that want to reach out and affect our lives," he writes.
[-1:16.00]Given the existing system,
[-1:17.00]which links together all 51 U.S. motor vehicle agencies,
[-1:18.00]"no other state agency tracks the movement of people more accurately."
[-1:19.00]Nor is DMV data used solely for matters related to driving.
[-1:20.00]"The state of Oregon (俄勒冈州) has 109 different offenses
[-1:21.00]that can result in the temporary loss of a driver's license;
[-1:22.00]50 of them have nothing at all to do with driving," writes Garfinkel.
[-1:23.00]Residents of the state of Wisconsin (威斯康星州), he notes,
[-1:24.00]can lose their license for not paying library fines,
[-1:25.00]neglecting to shovel snow away from the walk in front of their house,
[-1:26.00]or failing to trim a tree whose branches hang over a neighbor's property.
[-1:27.00]In the state of Kentucky,students who drop out of school,
[-1:28.00]have nine or more absences without being excused,
[-1:29.00]or whose grades are below a given standard,
[-1:30.00]lose their driving privileges "unless they can prove family hardship".
[-1:31.00]It's hard to avoid being seen on the DMV computer screens,
[-1:32.00]but there are ways to keep a low profile in other areas.
[-1:33.00]One health official recommends that when you sign a medical form
[-1:34.00]you change it to make it clear "
[-1:35.00]that you do not consent to having information re-released
[-1:36.00]or sold to a second party without your direct,written consent".
