英语不定冠词用法归纳

(1)表类别

即指人或事物的类别。如:

A church is a place of worship. 教堂是做礼拜的地方。

A tiglon is a cross between a lion and a tiger. 虎狮是狮子和老虎的杂交种。

A lay-by is a space at the side of a main road, where drivers can pull up if they want a rest. 路边停车处是干道沿线供想休息的司机停车的地方。

(2)表数量

即表示数量“一”。如:

I’ve spent a couple of days in the country. 我在乡下呆了两3天。

In any case, I shall go home in a day or two. 无论如何我过一两天就回家。

And in a week or two I’ll be among the unemployed. 再过一两个星期我就要失业了。

 (3)表同一性

即表示“同一”,说明事物的同一性质、特征、大小或程度等。如:

All the desks are of a size. 所有这些课桌的大小都是一样的。

Vines are of a climbing habit. 藤有向上爬的习性。

(4)表程度

用于most前表示“非常”“十分”。如:

Thank you for a most enjoyable party. 感谢你这次令人愉快的聚会。

He conducted himself in a most gracious manner. 他表现得极为温文尔雅。

It had been a most trying experience for them. 这对他们来说是一次最恼人的经历了。

This book is a most desirable addition to the library of every teacher of English. 这是每个英语教师都极其希望在自己的藏书中增添的一部书。

 (5)用于序数词前

用在序数词前表示“再一”“又一”。如:

I won’t excuse you a second time. 下一次我可不原谅你。

We suggest you do the experiment a second. 我们建议你再做一次这个试验。

Several candidates were called for a second interview. 有几个候选人被叫来作第二次面试。

Do have a second helping — there’s heaps more. 再吃一些吧——东西多着呢。

He gave her another sedative. Then a third. 他给了她另一片镇静剂,接着又给了一片。

They proposed a third formula for the new swimming pool. 他们为新游泳池提出了第3种方案。

(6)用于由动词转化来的名词前

表示一次、一番等义(通常与 have, take, make, give 等动词连用)。如:

I think I’ll go for a swim. 我想游泳去。

The couple had a violent quarrel. 这对夫妻发生了激烈的争吵。

We had a visit from Richard on Sunday. 星期日理查德来拜访我们。

Have a try at the exam. I’m sure you will pass. 考考试试,你肯定能通过。

I snatched a look at the answers while the teacher was out of the room. 趁老师不在房间时,我迅速地偷看了一下答案。

(7)用于专有名词前

相当于a certain,意为“一个”“某个”。如:

A Mrs Green is waiting to see you. 有一位格林太太正等着见你。

A Mrs Chambers called this morning. 一位叫钱伯斯太太的今天上午来过电话。

A Mr Wingate phoned and left a message for you. 一位姓温盖特的先生给您打来电话并留了言。

Let’s suppose a Mr So-and-so registers at the hotel. 我们假设有个某某先生来旅馆登记。

(8)用于抽象名词前

使之具体化,表示与该之相关的具体的人或事。如:

The party was quite a success. 这次聚会很成功。

He wasn’t a success as a teacher. 他不是个好教师。

She was a success both as a pianist and as a conductor. 她是出色的钢琴家和指挥家。

Your visit will be a pleasure. 你的来访是件令人高兴的事。

Working is a pleasure to me. 工作对我来说是件乐事。
