国内英语新闻:Taiwan Quake Collapses Buildings, Kills at Least 3
A strong earthquake struck southern Taiwan near the city of Tainan Saturday, collapsing a massive apartment complex and killing at least three people, including an infant. Authorities say dozens were injured.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter of the shallow 6.4 magnitude quake was located nearly 43 kilometers southeast of Tainan, a city of nearly two million, where the damage was most extensive. The quake, which seismologists in Taiwan said had the equivalent impact of two atomic bombs, began shaking buildings around 4 a.m. local time.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said several aftershocks followed. On social media and in news reports, some remarked that the quake reminded them of the island’s massive quake in 1999.
Saturday morning’s earthquake hit while many were still asleep and seriously impacted at least three buildings and damaged others, including historic temples.
In Tainan, two buildings which partially collapsed during the quake could be seen tilting sharply away from their foundations with their lower floors crumpled below. The most serious damage was the toppling of two 17-story apartment buildings.
Rescue under way
Live broadcasts on Taiwan news stations showed rescue workers climbing up the side of the crumpled structure, a tangled mess of concrete, reinforcing bars and twisted metal window frames.
According to Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA), more than 220 people have been rescued from the complex so far. However, a newborn girl and a 40-year old man were among those killed.
Getting to parts of the building complex, which slumped over a massive section of a nearby thruway was challenging, officials said.
CNA said that at least 250 people are believed to have been in the residential buildings at the time the earthquake hit. Given that Saturday leads up to the Lunar New Year holiday, however, some reports have suggested that more could have been inside the building.
At another partially collapsed building, at least 30 residents have reportedly been rescued and are safe. Photos on social media from shopping centers showed goods spilled out from their shelves and broken glass on the floor.
