体坛英语新闻:South African rugby coach to be dismissed: report
JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Peter de Villiers, coach of South Africa's world champion rugby team, the Springboks, and his two assistants may all lose their jobs on Monday when their performance reviews are completed, Rapport newspaper reported on Sunday.
The newspaper did not quote anyone in the leadership of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) on the record. However, it did say it has reliably learned that SARU are definitely considering changes to the coaching staff and that none of the current three is safe in his position.
Rapport said that, having talked to a number of top rugby officials and informed people, it appears that De Villiers may just survive.
However, two assistants Dick Muir and Gary Gold's days appeared numbered following the Springbok team's weak performances in this year's Tri-Nations series against New Zealand and Australia. South Africa, the defending Tri-Nations champions, won only one of their six tests.
The Springbok coaching staff and team's performances will be evaluated by a SARU technical committee in Cape Town on Monday.
At the review, De Villiers will have the opportunity to put his side of the story about why the Springboks were so poor this year.
SARU vice president James Stoffberg is the technical committee chairman. Other members of the committee are SARU president Oregan Hoskins, SARU deputy president Mark Alexander and Golden Lions president Kevin de Klerk.
If any of the coaches are dismissed SARU will have to pay them out as they all have contracts until the end of next year.
