国际英语新闻:EU calls on both sides of Honduras to resume dialogue

2009-11-08来源:和谐英语
STOCKHOLM, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) urged on Saturday Honduras' ousted President Manuel Zelaya and de facto President Roberto Micheletti to return to the dialogue in an attempt to save the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Agreement.

EU is concerned over the interruption of the process towards the implementation of the Tegucigalpa/San Jose Agreement, Sweden, which holds the current rotating EU Presidency, said in a statement.

The statement expressed also the firm support from EU to the efforts made by the Verification Commission established in the Agreement, as well as to the OAS and the United States to facilitate further dialogue to ensure the implementation of the Agreement.

According to the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Accord, which was signed by representatives from both Zelaya and Micheletti last week, the two sides would form a unity government by November 5 and the National Congress would decide to restore Zelaya to the presidency.

But on Friday Zelaya said that the agreement had failed because of Micheletti's attempts to boycott the political agreement. From the de facto government's point of view, Zelaya had not fulfilled the agreement because he did not present his proposals to form a government of unity.

The Honduran political crisis was ignited by a military-backed coup, in which President Zelaya was ousted on June 28. Later that day, Congress Speaker Roberto Micheletti was sworn in as interim president. The coup has resulted in deep opinion diverge inside the country.
