国际英语新闻:Obama Hails Success of US Workers, Technology
U.S. President Barack Obama is stepping up his campaign to try to show Americans that economic progress is being made on the strength and ingenuity of U.S. workers.
During his weekly address Saturday, Obama hailed the increase in new jobs last month. He spoke at a manufacturing plant where people are being hired.
The president says new technology is a key to reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Obama says American oil production is at an 8-year high, and that drilling for more oil in the U.S. is not a quick fix to end of the cycle of rising gas prices.
The president said instead of being distracted by politicians promising cheaper gas, the U.S. needs to focus on American-made energy, such as solar, wind, natural gas and biofuels. He also chided Congress for spending $4 billion on subsides for profit-making oil companies.
In the Republican address, Governor Jack Dalrymple of North Dakota - which borders Canada - blamed President Obama's policies for stagnating job growth and adding to the cost of living. Dalrymple says Obama's refusal to approve a huge oil pipeline project is costing jobs and lowering production of a fuel source that could help lower gasoline prices.
