以色列打死一名试图刺杀警察的袭击者

The tense Old City section of east Jerusalem saw another violent encounter Monday when an attacker tried to stab an Israeli policeman before being shot dead.

A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces said the attack happened near the Lions Gate and that the knife was deflected by the policeman's protective vest.

The incident is the latest in a wave of attacks to take place in Jerusalem linked to the holy site that Muslims call the al-Aqsa mosque and Jews call the Temple Mount.

Palestinians, already frustrated by continued Jewish settlements in lands they want for a future state, accuse Israelis of trying to restrict them from the site.  Israel denies the charge and accuses Palestinian militants of inciting citizens to riot.
