The Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said he will ask his cabinet to approve the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners, as a gesture aimed at strengthening the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Mr. Olmert was speaking at a summit hosted by the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. It's their first meeting since Hamas forces defeated Fatah in the Gaza Strip, leading to a political split in the Palestinian territories. From Sharm el-Sheikh, Haver Sarly reports.

Mr. Olmert promised to release 250 prisoners from Mr. Abbas' Fatah faction, and to take unspecified steps to ease movement for the Palestinians in the West Bank. He described Mr. Abbas as a partner for peace, but he did not promise the final status negotiations which the Arab leaders at the meeting called for. He only said that his ambition was to arrive at such talks. The meeting aimed at boosting the image of Mr. Abbas and at isolating his rivals in Hamas after they took over of Gaza.

Earlier, Palestinian militants from the Hamas Movement issued what appears to be the first audio message from the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, since he was seized in a cross border raid from the Gaza Strip exactly a year ago. The voice on the tape says his health is deteriorating, and calls on Israel to meet his captor' demands for the release of large numbers of Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

An annual United Nations report on illegal drugs says opium production in Afghanistan is soaring out of control. The World Drug Report says 90% of the world's illegal opium now comes from Afghanistan, and that cultivation of opium poppies increased dramatically last year despite the presence of 30,000 international troops. Thomas Pietschmann, the report's author, says production in Afghanistan's Helmand province alone has now outstripped that of entire countries.

"The province of Helmand itself is around 70,000 hectares under cultivation, which is three times the total area under cultivation in Myanmar. So only one province, three times as important as the whole of Myanmar, the second-largest opium-producing country."
The UN report warns that Afghanistan is unlikely to regain real security until illegal drug production is tackled.

The World Bank's board has announced its appointing of a former US official, Robert Zoellick, as the bank's president. He will replace Paul Wolfowitz, who stands down at the end of the month after a controversy about a pay rise and promotion given to his girlfriend. James Comarasamy reports from Washington.

Members of the World Bank's board have given Robert Zoellick the unanimous approval. In a statement confirming his appointment as president, they praised the former US deputy Secretary of State for his strong leadership and managerial qualities, saying he had the necessary drive to enhance the bank's credibility and effectiveness. Both of those suffered during the drawn-out favoritism scandal which led to the resignation of the World Bank's most recent president, Paul Wolfowitz.

People in southern India and Pakistan are struggling to cope with the effects of three days of heavy rain that's left hundreds of people dead, and tens of thousands homeless after severe flooding. And there are warnings that more bad weather is imminent. The Pakistani city of Karachi has seen some of the worst storms in decades. Officials have been evacuating residents from shantytowns where badly built homes collapsed or were washed away by the torrential rain. Large parts of the city are without waterpower or water.

The fossilised remains of a giant tropical penguin have been discovered by an international team of scientists. It was one and half meters tall, and lived around thirty six millions years ago. Scientists say the bird, Icadyptes salasi penguin, had a long protracted skull and elongated spear like beak. Nill Bouldler reports.

The Icadyptes salasi penguin would dwarf all the penguins who walk the planet today. Its well preserved skeleton was discovered on the southern coast of Peru. Along with the remains were as many as four other previously undiscovered penguin species, all of whom appeared to have preferred the tropics for colder climates. Indeed, the Icadyptes appears to have lived happily at such warmer latitudes, at a time when world temperatures were much, much hotter than they are today, and long before anyone thought penguins had reached such low latitudes.

Almost 300 federal police officers in Mexico including the heads of more than thirty regional units have been temporarily suspended, as part of an effort to tackle corruption and links to organized crimes within the force. The secretary for public security said the officers will be put through what he called a trust test, which is expected to include drug checks, lie detected tests and psychological examinations. The 34 officers who perform best will be promoted to lead the regional units, whilst those who fail the tests will be fired from the force.

And that's the end of this bulletin of BBC World News.
