An international team of scientists say they have found the first hound evidence of water outside the solar system. The researchers say unmistakable signs of water vapour have been discovered in the atmosphere of a new giant gas planet 64 light years away. Professor Jonathan Tennyson of University College London is part of the research team.

"The implications are, I think, quite far-reaching and it'll take us a long time to get there. This is the first time that anyone is able to identify any molecule at all on a planet orbiting on other star. One of the holy grails of this work is to try to find planets which have life on, and where we are going to find life on is by very detailed understanding of I should composition their atmosphere."

The controversial issue of the dismissal of eight federal prosecutors of the United States which has raised important constitutional questions in Washington has been highlighted again at a special congressional hearing. A former White House political director, Sara Taylor, ordered to give evidence to a senate judiciary committee, said she did not discuss with President Bush's controversial firing of eight federal prosecutors. But Ms. Taylor refused to give full answers about her role.
"I have received a letter from the counsel to the President, informing me that the President has directed me not to testify concerning White House, consideration, deliberations, communications, whether internal or external, relating to the possible dismissal or appointment of the United States attorneys."

The former president of the Peru, Alberto Fujimori, says he is delighted that a Chilean judge has rejected a request to extradite him to face corruption and human rights charges in Peru. Mr. Fujimori denies the charges. The Peruvian government announced any immediate appeal against the decision which has to be confirmed by the Chilean Supreme Court. Wyran Bull reports.

During his decade in power, Alberto Fujimori was credited with ending the rebel insurgence in Peru and steadying the economy. But by 2000, a series of political and financial scandals had beset his government. Mr. Fujimori resigned and fled Peru for Japan. The congress in Lima responded by officially sacking its former president and declaring him morally unfit to govern, then came charges that Mr. Fujimori stole 15 million dollars of Peruvian state funds and used excessive measures against left-wing rebels during his decade in power.

The man accused of poisoning a former Russian agent in London Andrei Lugovoi has said Britain has insulted Moscow by suggesting that a trial there will not be fair or impartial. Mr. Lugovoi is accused of killing Alexander Litvinenko, also a former agent in London last year. Sources have told the BBC that British ministers are now actively considering a range of retaliatory measures against Russia. Richard Galpin reports from Moscow.

It's unlikely anything affecting Britain's booming trade and investment in Russia will be considered. So one option could be the expulsion of some Russian diplomats from London, and that could well lead to retaliatory action against the British community here in Russia. The Russian governments already expressed surprise of the angry statements coming from London, and continues to offer the possibility of putting Mr. Lugovoi on trial in Moscow. Something dismissed by British officials.

Wildlife experts have raised serious concern over whether the world would continue to be able to see one of the most iconic and beautiful sights of Africa, half a million flamingos strutting their brilliant pink plumages across a lake in Tanzania. They said the flamingos are under threat because of plans to build a soda ash plant alongside Lake Natron. More from our East Africa aid correspondent Adam Mynott.

It is the salt in Lake Natron that has attracted the attention of industrialists who want to build a soda ash plant next to the lake. Lake Natron Resources Limited, linked to the Indian multi-national Tata Company, is holding a consultative meeting today to outline its proposals. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds say they have not been invited.
