Supporters of the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev are celebrating his apparent victory in the parliamentary election intended to show that Kazakhstan is becoming more democratic. Preliminary results are not due until later on Sunday. Crowds have gathered in the main square of the capital Astana. Our correspondent Natalia Antelava is there.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev came to congratulate his supporters on their choice. He told them he had no doubt about his party's overwhelming victory. The first and government backed exit polls are already proving him right. They show that not a single opposition party got into parliament in an election that the president promised would bring democracy to the country. Mr. Nazarbayev had said that this parliamentary vote will show the world that his oil-rich state is serious about democracy.

Two men who hijacked a Turkish airliner on a flight from Northern Cyprus to Istanbul have surrendered. The plane landed at the southern Turkish resort of Antalya where the pilot said it needed to be refueled. On landing, most of the 130 passengers escaped. The pilots escaped through a cockpit window and after five hours of negotiations the remaining passengers were released.

A key advisor in the White House during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, Michael Deaver, has died at the age of 69. Michael Deaver was both celebrated and scorned as the man who focused on how the president looked as much as what he actually said.

And police in the American state of Florida overseeing a program to exchange guns for designer sport shoes were surprised when a man handed in a surface-to-air missile launcher. Under a scheme called "Kicks for Guns" anyone who handed in a weapon was given a pair of trainers. The man said he found the rocket launcher in a shed and exchanged it for a pair of designer sport shoes.
