The former chief aide to the Brazilian President , Jose Dirceu, has been indicted to stand trial for alleged corruption related to a political bribery scandal. Mr. Dirceu, once considered one of the most powerful members of the government of President Lula da Silva, is accused of involvement in an illegal scheme through which the governing Workers' Party allegedly financed election campaigns and bribed legislators.

A court in the United States has requested the extradition of a former right wing paramilitary leader in Columbia who's been stripped of the presidential prison treatment afforded to demobilized fighters. The Columbian authorities say the paramilitary leader Carlos Mario Jimenez alias Macaco violated a peace agreement by continuing to organize cocaine shipments and run a criminal empire from prison.

The head of the powerful military in Turkey, General Yasar Buyukanit, has spoken of what he calls "centres of evil"trying to corrode the secular nature of the country. General Buyukanit's statement came ahead of the expected election as president of Turkey of the controversial Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul. Stephen Evans reports.

The statement said furtive plans appeared every day aimed at undoing Turkey's modern advances and ruining its secular and democratic structure. It comes on the eve of the third round of voting in parliament for the new president with the governing party's candidate Abdullah Gul, a former Islamist, almost certain to be elected. The military has made it clear it's opposed to this prospect. And this statement is clearly intended as a warning to Mr. Gul to stick to his promise to uphold the secular constitution.

A Russian newspaper editor has expressed surprise at a statement by the Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika that the murder of one of his journalists Anna Politkovskaya was ordered from abroad. The editor, Roman Shleynov, said nothing could be ruled out but it was too early in the investigation to be definite. He accused Mr. Chaika of making political rather than legal remarks. "This is a political statement. And this political statement can really influence the investigators. Because you know in Russia, the statement made by the head of the Prosecutor's Office, the statement made by the president, they much influence the common investigators."

The United Nations nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, says Iran has resolved questions over its test with plutonium, a key issue in the dispute over Tehran's controversial nuclear program. A joint statement issued in / Vienna listed a number of other issues which Iran has said it will settle by the end of the year. From Vienna, Bethany Bell.

The IAEA has been investigating the Iranian nuclear program since 2003 amidst fears Tehran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran insists its nuclear activity is peaceful. If Tehran holds to this working plan, it could go some way to allaying concerns about its past nuclear activities. However, Iran is still enriching uranium in defiance of the Security Council.

Opposition parties in Greece have attacked the center right government's response to the forest fires that continue to devastate large areas of the country, killing at least 63 people. The leader of the Socialist PASO Party George Papandreou said the government had been totally incompetent. Domini Hughs reports from Athens.

Across Greece, thousands have now been evacuated from their homes. To the west of Athens, the Peloponnese Peninsula continues to see the worst of the fires with villagers rescued by helicopter. And even as the emergency continues, the government's handling of the crisis has been attacked, inadequate preparations and slow to react, say the critics. Fire crews have certainly been stretched to breaking point by the sheer number of outbreaks they had to tackle even with the uNPRecedented help that has come from Europe and beyond.

An American football star Michael Vick has been warned he could face up to five years in jail after he pleaded guilty to involvement in an illegal dog fighting ring. At a court appearance in Virginia, Vick admitted to financing and staging dog fights over several years. He accepted involvement in the killing of at least eight dogs. Vick, a quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, has already been suspended indefinitely without pay by the sports' governing body.
