The Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is having talks in Colombia with President Alvaro Uribe about his new role as mediator between the Colombian government and left-wing FARC guerrillas. The two men were expected to define Mr. Chavez's role in helping the two sides reach a deal leading to the FARC's release of high-profile hostages in exchange for imprisoned rebels. On arrival in Colombia, Hugo Chavez sounded an optimistic note about making progress. But he faces a tough task during his visit to the matter of hours. The two presidents were expected to define the role of Mr. Chavez in helping the two sides reach a deal, with the end results, the Farc's release of high-profile hostages in exchange for jailed rebels. But the upbeat Mr. Chavez has to address the reality that the Colombian government and the rebels disagree on several key issues including the creation of a demilitarized zone.

The Bishop of London has said the commemorative service held 10 years after the death of Diana "Princess of Wales" should mark the point where she's allowed to rest in peace. During the service in London, the Right Reverend Richard Chartres said people should not use her memory for scoring points. Flowers and tributes have been left near a road tunnel in Paris where Diana was killed in a car crash.

A farmers' leader in southern Greece says it will take all of farmers 10 years to recover from the fires that have ravaged 300,000 hectares of land in the Peloponnese. The director of the Confederation of Agriculture Cooperatives in Greece said at least 30,000 farmers had been hit. The fires killed more than 60 people.

Four people have died in an explosion in the southern Russian territory of Ingushetia which borders Chechnya. Local security officials say a car containing explosives blew up near a police vehicle in the local capital. Here's Steven Iac.

Reports from Nazran say a number of vehicles were burned down in an explosion in the city center. Local officials say the attacker appears to have been timed targeting a passing car with soldiers. The bombing comes less than a day after the family of an ethnic Russian woman teacher was shot dead in an Ingushetia village. Officials said that attack was designed to destabilize the republic and heighten tensions. Neighboring Chechnya, Ingushetia is now home to a low level guerrilla conflict involving Islamist militants, gangsters and Russian security forces.

An epidemic suspected to be hemorrhagic fever has claimed the lives of more than 100 people in a remote part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A doctor in southwestern Congo said the epidemic had affected 4 villagers so far and there were fears that it could spread further. Nornew Zicman reports from Kinshasa.

One health official Doctor Jean-Constantin Kanow said that chickens and pigs had started dying in the villages affected by the epidemic three months ago. But now, people were also affected. The World Health Organization has sent a team to take blood samples to be analyzed at laboratories specializing in hemorrhagic fever. Congo's last major Ebola outbreak struck Kikwit in western Congo, about 400 kilometers west of the current outbreak, killing more than 200 people in 1995.

The US Navy has won the latest round in a court battle over whether it can test high power sonar equipment which wildlife experts say can kill whales and other mammals. A federal appeals court overturned an earlier decision, banning the use of sonar in 11 tests to be held off the California Coast in the next two years.
