The former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has arrived back in the capital Lima, after being deported from Chile earlier in the day. He faces charges of corruption and human rights abuse, from Lima, Dan Collyns.

In the move, typical of the Peruvian government's handling of Mr. Fujimori's extradition. The former leader's flight was diverted without any notice from its planned destination. While hundreds of his supporters decked in his orange campaign colors and banners bearing his face waited at Lima's official police airbase. The aircraft flew over the landing strip and landed at the "Las Palmas" Air Base in another part of the Peruvian capital. Dozens of camera crews and several members of Parliament from Mr. Fujimori's political party including his brother Santiago also looked on as the aircraft flew fast.

Talks are taking place in the United Nations in New York in an attempt to improve the work of rebuilding Iraq and stabilizing the political, economic and security situation. The meeting chaired by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, brings together Iraq, its neighbors and major donor nations. From the UN, here's Laura Trevelyan.

The United Nations has been wary about operating in Iraq since 22 of its staff were killed by a suicide bomb attack on the organization's Baghdad headquarters in 2003. But last August, the UN Security Council passed a resolution, calling for greater United Nations' involvement in Iraq. This meeting is about exactly what that role will be. The UN is also being charged with helping to bring about talks between Iraq and other countries in the region.

The governing Liberal Democratic Party in Japan is preparing to choose a new leader. An Internal election that should decide who is to be the country's new Prime Minister. The outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe decided to resign after his party was beaten in elections to Japan's Upper House. Chris Hogg reports from Tokyo.

There are two candidates to replace Mr. Abe. Taro Aso, the country's Foreign Minister, and Yasuo Fukuda, a veteran member of the Liberal Democratic Party, who is 71, would become the oldest Prime Minister Japan has had since the early 19th if he wins the contest. Mr. Fukuda is the front runner; he's seen as the more stable of the two candidates. After Shinzo Abe's messy resignation, and gaffe-prone of administration, party members are thought to be looking for someone who can steady the ship.

The detained Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has met in prayed with Buddhist monks on the fifth day of the street protests they've been leading. Her appearance gives additional authority to the demonstrations, which the BBC correspondent in the region says are the most serious challenge Burma's military rulers have faced in nearly two decades. The Monks Alliance has issued a statement calling on all citizens to join the monks in banishing what it called an evil dictatorship and enemy of the people.

China has called off talks with German officials due to be held later today, the same day Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet the exile Tibetan spiritual leader, the ** Lama, in Berlin. A German statement said China had cited technical reason for the cancellation. German officials described Mrs. Merkel's meeting with the ** Lama as a private exchange of views with the religious leader.

British farmers already hit by restrictions due to the foot-and-mouth outbreak in Southern England are facing the prospect of a second damaging livestock disease. A case of Bluetongue which had never previously been found in Britain has been discovered in a cow in the eastern county of Suffolk. Lisa Kastler reports.

This case is the first in the UK. The officials warned last month that an outbreak was likely. Bluetongue isn't dangerous to humans, but it's an enormous threat to livestock. James M. from the southeast office of the National Farmers Union says confirmation it's arrived in UK is a huge blow.

"This is obviously devastating news. We are in the middle of a foot-and-mouth crisis in the southeast in Surrey. During the summer we have seen the number of outbreaks within countries such as France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany increasing. And clearly, you know, the industry had been fearful that this would happen in England. Bluetongue is spread by midges, so recent weather conditions have been ideal for it to travel.

The wife of a Nigerian rebel leader in the troubled Niger Delta region says he's been detained in Angola on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. Azuka Okah told Reuters News Agency she got a phone call 3 weeks ago to say her husband Henry who heads one faction of the movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta was arrested as he was leaving Angola for Southern Africa. Mrs. Okah said she believed the Nigerian government was behind the arrest. Dozens of people have died in clashes in the Niger Delta.
