The United Nations special envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, is in the Burmese capital Naypyidaw, hoping to persuade the country's military rulers to end their violence suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations. But it is unclear whether the head of the government, General Than Shwe, will agree to meet him or whether Mr. Gambari will be allowed to talk to opposition leaders. Our Southeast Asia correspondent, Jonathan Head, is monitoring events from neighboring Thailand.

Burma's military rulers have turned their backs on the rest of the world, ignoring the persistent pleas for restraint from other leaders. Very few governments have any communication with them. So Ibrahim Gambari's mission offers the only opportunity to convey the outrage felt across the world over their brutal treatment to the unarmed demonstrators. He'd also be trying to assess which generals in the secretive ruling council are now calling the shots and whether there's any appetite for dialog with their opponents. Until now, the military has shown no leniency.

Burma's closest ally China has issued its strongest call, yet, for an end to the violence. The Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao, said Beijing hoped stability could be returned to Burma by peaceful means as quickly as possible and that all parties would work to promote reconciliation and democracy. The European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, urged China to exert more pressure on Burma. In an interview with a German newspaper, Mr. Solana said all countries with influence on the decisions of the military government should act now.

Turkish officials say Kurd's separatists have ambushed a bus in the southeast of the country, killing 12 people. The victims included both civilians and armed guards. The attack took place in the province of Sirnak near the Iraqi border and follows the killing of a local leader of the banned separatists group PKK. Rist poker has the details.

The local governor said the separatists opened fire on the bus after ambushing it and killed 12 of the 14 passengers. The victims included civilians and armed guards. Turkey has previously blamed similar attacks on Kurdish separatists operating from Iraq. It wants to take action against the rebels but there has been resistance not only from Iraqi Kurdish leaders but also from the Americans who fear Turkish operations might destabilize the relatively peaceful northern Iraq. Turkey has warned that it may take unilateral action if the attacks continue.

A homemade bomb has exploded in a busy park in the capital of the Maldives, Male, injuring 12 tourists. A government spokesman Mohamed Shareef said it was taking the attack very seriously as tourism was the lifeblood of the Maldives.

This is definitely uNPRecedented. Something of this nature, of this scale had never happened in the Maldives. In fact, the Maldives is the popular tourist destination and we pride ourselves on how peaceful and safe the country really is. And this is a country which actually attracts twice as many tourists as our population on an annual basis. We get 600,000 tourists coming in every year.

The United Nations Security Council has condemned a suicide bombing by the Taliban in Afghanistan on Saturday which killed 30 people in Kabul and what was the deadliest attack in the city since June. The Security Council called on the Afghan authorities to bring to justice those responsible for the bombing and other terrorist attacks.

The influential Republican Conservative, Newt Gingrich, has ended months of speculation by announcing that he won't run for the US presidency next year. Mr. Gingrich said new campaigning laws made it virtually impossible for him to be a candidate and retained his position as the head of his tax-exempt political organization. Correspondents say Mr. Gingrich has been seen as a figure who could have energized the right-winger of the Republican Party.

The main opposition party in Britain, the Conservatives, began their annual conference today as speculation grows that a general election may be called soon. John David reports.

Just a few weeks ago, a general election this year was regarded as a remote possibility. 3 months after taking over as Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was expected to wait until at least May next year before calling an election. But a strong lead in the opinion polls has tempted Mr. Brown to go early. The Conservative leader David Cameron says he is very excited about the prospect of an early election and called on Mr. Brown to make up his mind and stop dithering.
