Turkey says it will not tolerate Kurdish separate operations from neighboring Iraq, nor hesitate to pay whatever prices necessary to stop them. But it will respect Iraq's territorial integrity. The statement came at the end of emergency talks among the country's leaders, our correspondent in Istanbul Sarah Rainsford reports.

The emergency security meeting lasted for two and a half hours. What emerged was the statement strongly worded but noncommittal. Turkey says some 3,000 PKK fighters are based inside northern Iraq, tolerated, if not supported by Iraqi Kurds. Speaking a little later, the Prime Minister, Mr. Erdogan, seemed to suggest the cross-border military operation against the PKK is not yet imminent though, despite increasing pressure for that from the public and the military.

The right wing Prime Minister of Poland Jaroslaw Kaczynski has acknowledged defeat in country's general elections. Exit polls earlier indicated the Liberal Civic Platform Party was in the lead and very close to win a parliamentary majority. From Warsaw, here is Adam Easton.

The exit polls were released by Poland's Public and a private TV channels immediately after the polling stations closed. Both gave Donald Tusk's Civic Platform a commanding lead over Mr. Kaczynski's Law and Justice Party. If they are accurate and they have been reliable in the past, it means the voters have registered a resounding support for Mr. Tusk's promise to deliver a rapid economic growth and rebuild strained relations with Poland's neighbors. It's also a massive rejection of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski's Euro-skeptic and nationalist policies.

The right wing Swiss People's Party is emerging as the clear victor in a general election marked by ugly rows over immigrants and national identity. Prediction suggests it'll take 29% of the vote consolidating its position as the largest group in parliament. Imogen Foulkes reports from Bern.

It's the best result for Swiss People's Party in almost 100 years, and jubilant party officials say they, now, have a clear mandate to push forward some key policies, deporting foreigners and their families who commit crimes, ending all discussion of Switzerland ever joining the European Union, and introducing a ban on the building of minarets or mosques. The left wing Social Democrats saw their share of the vote plummet to just 19% losing out largely to the greens.

At least one Palestinian has been killed during clashes in the southern Gaza Strip between members of the Hamas movements and rivals from the militant group Islamic Jihad. At least seven people have died in Gaza in the last few days as tensions between the factions have spilt over into street battles. Mediators have brokered a deal aimed at stemming the violence.

The former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benozir Bhutto says militants have infiltrated the country's administrative and security operators enabling them to kill more than 130 people in bomb attacks when she returned from exile on Thursday. Ms. Bhutto said there were elements within the administration who wanted her out of the way. She said she'd asked the authorities for more protection, but only part of her requests had been granted.

A large wild fire is raging in the California seaside city of Malibu causing devastation and threatening the homes of wealthy show business celebrities. The blaze is thought to have been caused by a power cable igniting after being blown over. Our California correspondent David Willis sent this report.

Several buildings including a church have already been destroyed and the flames are hopscotching wooden hills above the beachfront homes of the rich and famous. Hundreds of properties have been evacuated including the dormitories of a local university as the flames twist and turn fanned by winds gusting at up to 130km/hr. Among celebrities whose homes are thought to be in the threatened area are Richard Gere and Dick Van Dyke.

Thousands of British Muslims have been attending a pop concert in London to help raise money for victims of the conflicts in the western Sudanese region of Darfur. It's thought to be the first and largest event of its kind within the Muslim community in Britain. One of the leading attractions was the 27-year-old musician Sami Yusuf. He's considered to be Islam's biggest rock star, although he's virtually unknown to most of the British public.
