An authoritative Iranian newspaper has launched a scathing attack on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, saying his behavior is endangering the nation. The Islamic Republic Daily said the recent speech in which the president described opponents of his nuclear program as traitors was an attempt to discredit political rivals ahead of parliamentary elections. Catherin Nagy reports.

The newspaper is a respected mouthpiece of the Islamic establishment. Its criticism of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggests he went a step too far by calling critics of his nuclear policies traitors. The nuclear policies of Iran under the president have brought the country close to a war and the strains are showing. Later this month, world powers intend to discuss further sanctions against Iran. On Wednesday, the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi joined the growing voices of concern within the country by calling on the government to respect the UN Security Council resolutions and stop its sensitive nuclear enrichment activities.

President Putin has accused foreign governments of sponsoring his political opponents in next month's general election so as to weaken Russia and carrying out what he called dirty tricks behind its back. Mr. Putin warned that the oligarchs who dominated Russian politics in the 1990's were planning a comeback.
"Those who confront us don't want the implementation of our plan because their tasks and plans for Russia are totally different. They need a weak and sick state, they want to have a disorganized and disoriented society, a divided society so that they can engage in their own little deals behind its back and to benefit at our expense. Regrettably, there are still those inside the country who are like jackals living on handouts from foreign embassies.

Union leaders and management have been meeting in France to try to bring an end to the strike on the transport system that is costing the country millions of dollars a day. The action is in protest to proposed changes to the pension system as Emma Jane Kirby reports from Paris.

Despite hours of talks between unions, management and government officials, there's still no real end in sight to the public transport strike that's been crippling France for the past six days. As negotiations concluded, leaders from the union operating the Paris metro declined to call off their industrial action, saying staff would vote on whether to resume work. Thousands of rail workers have already returned to their duties but many high speed trains were still unable to run after arsonists sabotaged tracks and signal boxes across the country overnight.

The former international cricket star Imran Khan, now an opposition politician in Pakistan, has been freed from jail in southern Kenyan. Mr. Khan was detained last week as he tried to address a student gathering in Lahore. Barbara Plett reports from Islamabad.

Imran Khan was detained last week and charged under anti-terrorism laws. He had recently begun a hunger strike. Now he and thousands of other opposition activists have been released. Officials say it's a goodwill gesture ahead of forthcoming parliamentary elections. Analysts say General Musharraf is responding to international pressure. They say he's also feeling more confident about his grip on power. Crucially, he's used emergency laws to purge Supreme Court judges who might have declared his new presidential term illegal.

The owners of Northern Ireland's only salmon fish farm have said that their entire stock was wiped out in a spectacular jellyfish attack.
