以色列司法改革引争议

The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted his coalition government will forge ahead with plans to weaken the supreme court despite mass street protests and criticism from legal officials.

Mr. Netanyahu told his religious nationalist coalition that they had been elected on a campaign pledge to reform the justice system.

Its supporters say the supreme court has become too interventionist and could undermine other changes the new right wing government wants to make.

Under the plan, a simple majority in parliament would be able to overturn supreme court decisions.
