发展中国家肥胖问题堪忧
There are fresh calls for governments around the world to tax unhealthy foods to help tackle rising levels of obesity. In the past there's been a lot of media attention focusing on the problems caused by obesity in rich nations, but now researchers at the British think tank, the Overseas Development Institute say the number of overweight and obese adults in developing countries almost quadrupled between 1980 and 2008. Laurence Pollard spoke to the BBC's global health correspondent Julia Mezonda and asked her to sum up the key findings in this report.
This is called the Future Diets Report. It analysed the existing data on the global obesity rates and found, like you said, the key concern was developing countries. And just give you a bit of comparison, in developed countries like the UK or US, rates went from 321 million to 571 million, overweight or obese people, so a steep rise. But in the developing countries like Egypt and Mexico, numbers almost quadrupled from 250 million to 904 million.
