UNIT 17 BUYING THINGS
1. How much does it cost?
Good morning, sir. Can I help you?
Yes. I’m looking for a present for my wife.
This handbag is very nice, sir.
Is it expensive?
Oh, no, sir. It’s quite cheap. It costs fifteen pounds.
Fifteen pounds? That’s too expensive, I’m afraid.
Look at this vase, sir!
No. That one’s too big. What about the one next to it?
Ah, yes, sir. This one is smaller. And it’s cheaper.
How much does it cost?
Eleven pounds thirth pence.
Eleven pounds thirth? It’s too expensive and its’ too heavy.
What about one of these?
How much is it? How much does it cost?
Eight pounds fifty. It costs eight pounds fifty.
It’s too expensive.
This is cheaper. It’s four pounds fifty. And these are very cheap. They’re four pounds.
I’ll take the big brown one. My wife will like that. She likes bears. I’ll buy that one.
2. What size is it?
How much is this hat?
It’s fifty pounds, madam.
That’s expensive. What’s it made of?
It’s made of real fur. It’s a very good hat. Those hats are cheaper. This one here costs twelve pounds. Who is it for?
It’s for my husband.
It’s probably too small for your husband. It isn’t big enough. It’s size 5. Now, this one is bigger.
What size is it?
It’s size 7. Is that big enough for your husband? Is that big enough?
Yes, it’s big enough. It’s the right size for my husband. What’s it made of?
It’s made of wool. And it costs ten pounds.
What do you think of it?
Will, it looks very nice on you, madam. But will your husband like it?

Perhaps not. It’s the right size and it’s not too expensive. But my husband prefers very dark colours.
The fur hat is dark, madam, and it’s the right size. There. What do you think of that?
It’s very nice. I’ll buy it.
3. A kilo of tomatoes
There you are, Mrs Williams. A kilo of tomatoes, half a kilo of carrots, four apples and two lemons. Anything else?
Yes, please. A big cabbage, and two kilos of potatoes. Oh, and a pineapple. . .
The pineapples are very expensive. Eighty pence for this small one.
It looks too small.
Is this one big enough?
Yes, I’ll buy that one.
That’ll be one pound twenty for the pineapple. Two pounds fifty all together.
