国内英语新闻:China calls for political solution to Ukraine crisis

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the parties concerned would continue to implement the Minsk ceacefire agreement in resolving the crisis in Ukraine, and initiate an inclusive dialogue as soon as possible, said a Chinese envoy here Friday.

"Political solution is the only right way to solve the question of Ukraine," said Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine.

To pursue a balanced, durable and comprehensive political settlement of the Ukraine issue, the international community should push the parties concerned to make full use of existing dialogue and liaison channels, strengthen communication, take actions conducive to the establishment of mutual trust and avoid confrontation, he said.

"China supports any effort helpful to the parties to engage in dialogues and consultations and seek a political settlement of the crisis, and will continue to play an active and constructive role in seeking political settlement of the question of Ukraine," he said.

The Ukrainian government and the rebels inked a ceasefire agreement on Sept. 5 in Minsk, capital of Belarus, at a meeting also attended by envoys from Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Liu said since the signing of the Minsk agreement, there have been no large-scale offensive actions in Eastern Ukraine, but the security situation on the ground still remains fragile.

"With attacks in violation of the ceasefire agreement from time to time causing causalities and damages to infrastructure, China is deeply worried and concerned about the situation," he said.

Liu also suggested attention be given to address the legitimate concerns of the parties concerned so as to realize a balance of interests among all parties.

"The top priority now is for the parties concerned to implement the Minsk agreement effectively and comprehensively, and ensure the realization of the ceasefire in Eastern Ukraine," he said.
