国内英语新闻:Chinese FM meets with U.N. general assembly president

BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the President of the 70th session of the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) Mogens Lykketoft here on Saturday, to discuss issues of common concern, including the leading role of the United Nations in international affairs.

Wang recalled that Chinese President Xi Jinping elaborated on China's policy proposals for global development and a series of measures to implement the Post-2015 Development Agenda at the United Nations (U.N.) Sustainable Development Summit at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

Xi also co-chaired the Roundtable on South-South Cooperation and would chair the U.N. Women Summit.

According to Wang, these developments are among practical actions performed by the Chinese government to take the lead in implementing the Post-2015 Development Agenda, which also embodies China's sincere support for the U.N.

The Chinese foreign minister said China, as a founding member of the U.N., has consistently supported the organization in playing an important role in international affairs, has advocated that the international community should adhere to the mission and principles of the U.N. Charter, and has actively pushed forward multilateralism.

He also added that poverty elimination and economic development are of great significance to all the countries when the world faces many development challenges.

As the world's biggest developing economy and a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, China appreciates and upholds the decision of the 70th session of the U.N. General Assembly to make development issues a priority, Wang said.

While expressing his concern for development in China and his admiration of the progress China has achieved, Lykketoft said China, an important U.N. member, has played an important constructive role in international affairs.

Lykketoft said he has carefully studied the Chinese president's speech at the U.N. Development Summit and highly appreciated China's active measures in combatting climate change and promoting sustainable development.
