国际英语新闻:WWII bomb exploses in Germany, killing one
BERLIN, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A World War II bomb exploded in Germany's western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, killing one and wounding several others.
The accident happened at around 13:30 (GMT 1130) on an industrial site on the outskirts of the city Euskirchen, police spokesman Norbert Hardt said.
An excavator operator accidentally touched the bomb with his digger while moving debris and brought it to explosion.
The man died at the scene and his identity is still unclear, Hardt said.
Eight others were wounded in the blast, two of them with serious injuries.
The shock wave shattered windows within several miles of the explosion spot. Police said the ceiling of a local supermarket fell down, but no one was injured.
The bomb is thought to be one of thousands dropped by allied forces on the Euskirchen area in 1944. In 2012, more than 700 unexploded bombs were reportedly cleared across North Rhine-Westphalia.
