国际英语新闻:Indian capital to come under presidential rule after AAP chief minister resigns

2014-02-16来源:Xinhuanet

NEW DELHI, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- India's central government Saturday decided to impose president's rule in Delhi following the resignation of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his council of ministers Friday.

Meanwhile, the local assembly of the Indian capital will now be kept in suspended animation, according to government officials.

The central government rejected the 49-day-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's recommendation to dissolve the assembly and call for fresh elections.

The cabinet decision will come into effect after the promulgation of a notification by President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday. The decision will also need parliament's approval.

The president's rule is to be imposed as no party was in a position to form an alternative government, according to government officials.

The AAP government of Delhi resigned Friday after it suffered a defeat on the Jan Lokpal or anti-graft bill in the Delhi assembly. The bill was a priority of the local election agenda of AAP late last year.
