国际英语新闻:British, Italian PMs stress importance of cooperating on European reform
LONDON, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday met with his Italian counterpart Matteo Renzi in London, with both sides stressing the importance of furthering cooperation at the European level.
"Prime Minister Renzi set out the progress of his reform agenda in Italy, and they agreed on the importance of working together on reform at the European level," especially while Italy holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement following the meeting.
The two leaders looked forward to agreement on a package of measures on climate change and energy at the European Council in October, according to the statement.
They also agreed on the importance of "pushing for an ambitious agreement" between the EU and the United States in 2015 on a new Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
Cameron and Renzi during their meeting discussed the situation in Ukraine and the importance of the implementation of the peace plan "agreed between President Poroshenko and President Putin," the spokesperson noted.
They also discussed the actions being taken to tackle the threat of Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria and expressed "shared concern" about the situation in Libya.
The two leaders expressed their determination to support "coordinated international efforts" in Libya led by the United Nations (UN) Special Representative Bernardino Leon, according to the spokesperson.
The Libyan parliament on Monday started talks with opposing political figures in the border town of Ghadames, in a bid to prevent the country from worsening further into anarchy.
The talks were held under the aegis of the UN Support Mission in Libya and on the initiative of the UN Secretary General's Special Representative Bernardino Leon.
