国际英语新闻:Some states to apply once again for Palestinian statehood bid: Abbas
RAMALLAH, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Some states are exerting efforts to apply once again to the United Nations Security Council for the Palestinian statehood bid, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced on Sunday.
Abbas told reporters at the inauguration of a public park in the West bank city of al-Beereh that the Palestinians "are compelled to apply to the international legitimacy to gain some of their rights."
"The Security Council is the highest international forum that states and nations apply to in time of crisis. We want a Security Council resolution that restores our rights," said Abbas.
He added that "the implementation of the Security Council resolution 194 related to the Palestinian refugees' right of returning, stopping settlement and establishing a state on 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital 'are our rights."
The U.S.-sponsored direct peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians had been stalled since March last year due to differences on settlement expansion in the West Bank and also on security and borders.
"We are following a smooth political and diplomatic plan to restore our legal rights, so if Israel is ready to regret its violations to the agreements and treaties, we will be ready, but unfortunately, they (Israelis) are not ready,' said Abbas.
Last December, an Arab-backed proposal for a Security Council resolution to end the Israeli military occupation within three years had failed to gain the UN Security Council consensus.
Three years ago, the Palestinians had launched a diplomatic campaign to promote the Palestinian diplomatic representation at the international organizations. The UN General Assembly upgraded their presence to a non-member observer state in November 2012.
