  The Snow Man

The Snow Man

One must have a mind of winter

To regard the frost and the boughs

Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time

To behold the junipers shagged with ice,

The spruces rough in the distant glitter;

Of the January sun; and not to think

Of any misery in the sound of the wind,

In the sound of a few leaves.

Which is the sound of the land

Full of the same wind

That is blowing in the same bare place.

For the listener, who listens in the snow,

And, nothing himself, beholds

Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

史蒂文斯(Wallace Stevens, 1879—1955)是美国最好的诗人之一。对他的诗的研究者不少，批评文集层出不穷，外加一个史蒂文斯协会办的史蒂文斯期刊，但他的诗至今读者很少。

史蒂文斯是个传奇诗人，恰恰因为他作为一个“人” 太不传奇：家室完整，平安且富足地在保险公司副董事长的位子上工作了20年。其诗在晚年（70岁左右）结出最奇异的果子，以至于生前来不及被人理解。其实，仅仅这个事实：四十五岁才时出版第一本，时隔十三年再出版一本—这种惊人的耐心和慢产，也是诗歌史上的罕见之事吧。
