European Union leaders have hit back at Boris Johnson’s demand to remove the Irish backstop from the Brexit withdrawal agreement. In a phone call with the new British Prime Minister, the Commission President Jean Claude Juncker stressed the deal couldn’t be changed.

Up to 150 migrants are feared to have drowned in a shipwreck off Libya. The UN Refugee Agency said that is the worst loss of life it’d seen this year. It said about the same number of migrants were rescued and had been returned to Libya.

The US government has ordered its first executions for 16 years. Five people found guilty of federal crimes, including rape and murder, would be put to death in December and January. Officials said further executions would follow.

Temperature records have been broken in Germany, Belgium and Netherlands for the second day in a row as hot air pushes up from North Africa. Experts say the likelihood of such extreme event is increasing due to global warming.

The Palestinian authority has said it’ll stop implementing agreements signed with Israel. The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made remarks at the meeting call to discuss this week’s demolition of Palestinian buildings near East Jerusalem.

The Mexican authorities say they have found two mass graves in the central State of Puebla with the remains of at least 20 people. They say one of the bodies was that of a senior state government official kidnapped a week ago.

And a member of an American conservative organization has been fired for mistakenly projecting a doctored version of the presidential seal behind Donald Trump as he addressed their meeting. The president seemed unaware that usually single-headed eagle on the seal had grown another to resemble that on the Russian coat of arms, while the arrows clasped in its foot were replaced with gulf clubs.
