The Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has responded to President Trump's announcement that he is scrapping peace negotiations with the Taliban. He said real peace was only possible when the Taliban stopped fighting and agreed to direct talks with the Afghan government. Aaliyah Atrophy reports from Kabul. President Trump's tweet came as a surprise for the Taliban, the government and ordinary people of Afghanistan. A Taliban source say the members of the group's political office in Qatar would hold urgent meetings about the US president's decision and that announcement was received with disappointment by many Afghans. Countrywide people are saying it has undermined their hopes for some sort of reduction in violence. The fact that Mr. Trump highlighted the death of one American soldier also stirred up anger.

The most senior British minister to quit the Prime Minister Boris Johnson's team, Amber Rudd has told the BBC that up to ninety percent of the government's time is spent on preparing for a no-deal Brexit. She said she had joined the cabinet in good faith, but no longer thought Mr. Johnson was committed to getting a deal. There is no evidence of the deal. There is no formal negotiation taking place. There was just a lot of conversations, but I think we should be doing so much more to get the deal. I support getting a deal. Almost every one of those twenty-one want to get a deal. Have voted for a deal in the past and longing to have another opportunity to do so. The Home Secretary Sajid Javid, sorry, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid vehemently denied that the government had given up on a deal, but said the government was sticking to his plan to take Britain out of the EU on October 31st, with or without one.

The United States and Turkey have begun joint military patrols in northeastern Syria. Six armoured Turkish vehicles crossed into Syrian territory and linked up with American troops while helicopters circled overhead. They will operate in the zone along the border.
