The United States and the Taliban are to hold their first face-to-face talks since the militants seize control of Afghanistan in August.

US officials have stressed this is not about recognizing the Taliban.

Instead, they say this is about continuing conversations with them on issues that matter to the US, such as the safe passage of American citizens and allies in Afghanistan as well as making sure the country doesn't turn into a hotbed for terrorists.
