Scientists in the United States say they've discovered that elephants eat a varied diet with individuals choosing among hundreds of plants to suit their needs.

Here's Helen Briggs.

Most of an elephant's day is spent jumping through a vast amount of grasses, leaves, fruits and roots.

But the precise mix of plants an elephant eats was previously unknown, partly because of the perils of getting close to one in the wild.

A US team made this discovery by analyzing plant DNA in the dung of wild elephants in Kenya.

They found individual diets were far more varied than expected, even among family members who forage together.

The scientists think this means individuals choose different selections of hundreds of plants to suit their specific needs, especially when pregnant or feeding their young.
