[01:56.30]on Mothering Sunday.
[01:59.85]In the old days,workers had time off from work to visit their mothers.
[02:06.93]Today Mothering Sunday is called Mother's Day in Britain.
[02:13.28]Children send Mother's Day cards to their mothers.
[02:18.32]They give their mothers flowers or sweets as presents.

[02:48.83]In the 1860s there was a terrible war in the United States

[02:59.91]There was a small town in the middle of the USA called Pruntytown.
[03:06.96]In this town,half the people fought on the northern side,
[03:12.60]and half fought on the southern side.
[03:17.15]At the end of the war,the people hated each other.
[03:22.89]Mrs Anna Reese Jarvis wanted the people to make friends with each other again.
[03:30.16]So she started "Mother's Friendship Day".
[03:34.60]On that day,she visited all the other mothers in her town and said,
[03:41.54]"God bless you,let us be friends with each other again."Her idea succeeded.
[03:51.08]The same thing happened in other parts of the country.
[03:56.04]Soon,all the women in the United States followed her example.
[04:02.21]After Mrs Jarvis died,her daughter carriedon the same idea,
[04:08.56]but she called Mother's Friendship Day Mother's Day.

[04:39.56]In the old days,London was known as a city of fog.
[04:45.81]The fog was as thick as pea-soup.
[04:49.65]London's fog was caused by factory smoke,so it was called "smog".

[05:08.24]even during the daytime.
[05:12.08]People had to wear "smog-masks" over their faces when they went out.
