[02:37.47]Americans have been celebrating Thanksgiving in one way or another since the 1600s
[02:46.71]However,this holiday wasn't really celebrated in the modern way until the 1890s.
[02:55.65]At that time,
[02:58.81]the leaders were searching for a holiday that could bring the people together
[03:05.34]as one nation,especially new immigrants from abroad.
[03:15.00]Some leaders tried to change the true history of the first Thanksgiving
[03:21.48]more than a little bit.
[03:24.23]They wrote about how the English settlers found friendship with the Indians
[03:32.87]who they met in the new land called America.
[03:38.12]They said that the settlers and the Indians were like brothers and sisters.
[03:44.97]These leaders also described the first Thanksgiving meal
[03:53.33]as one cooked by the settlers for their guests,the Indians.
[03:58.89]So it seemed that the settlers and the Indians lived happily together.
[04:04.95]Sadly,some of what Americans were told was really just a myth.
[04:11.19]Soon after the first Thanksgiving,
[04:15.56]the Indians began to have problems with the settlers.
[04:20.83]Some of the settlers had strange diseases that killed many of the Indians.

[04:32.88]wanted to teach their religion to the Indians.
[04:37.73]Most of the Indians,however,weren't interested in it.
