The UN Secretary General António Guterres has said the world must take action to avert collapse in Afghanistan by injecting cash directly into its economy.

He said this was necessary to stave off a catastrophic economic collapse.

Since the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan's assets abroad have been frozen and much development aid suspended.

As a result, ordinary Afghans are dealing with not only political repression, but increased economic hardship.

The UN chief says this must be alleviated without compromising principles.

Mr Guterres accused the Taliban of breaking promises on women's rights, saying if they were excluded from economic activity, society would never recover.

On Tuesday, the G20 countries meet to discuss how to tackle both the humanitarian situation and the militant threat in Afghanistan.

A report by a joint committee of British MPs has described the government's early response to the coronavirus pandemic as one of the worst national public health failures ever.

The chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee Jeremy Hunt said the government had not prepared for a pandemic of this nature.

We were over prepared for a flu-like pandemic.

And as a result of that, we weren't open enough to the approaches taken by places like Taiwan and Korea, which had experienced SARS and adopted a very different strategy.

They managed to avoid national lockdowns in the first year of the pandemic.

So, how do we be more open to what they did?

We, too, could have avoided the need for lockdown. But when that became inevitable, we also took too long.

The Republican governor of Texas Greg Abbott has issued an executive order, barring all Covid vaccine mandates in the state, including private businesses.

The move pits Mr Abbott against President Biden who last month called on employers to require their workers to be vaccinated.

Mr Biden has repeatedly asked the Texas governor to follow public health guidelines on the pandemic.

Will Grant reports.

So far in 2021, around 19,000 children have made what is one of the most dangerous journeys in the world, crossing the treacherous and dense jungle of the Darien Gap.

That's already three times higher than over the past five years combined.

UNICEF also found that around half the children making the trip are below the age of five.

But beyond the high number and their ages, it's also the conditions the children are exposed to in the jungle region which separates Columbia and Panama, which is of most concern.

The report highlights the high level of violence, including sexual abuse, trafficking, and extortion from criminal gangs operating in the region.
