Did you save enough for retirement in 2017? Will you save more in the new year? Perhaps a more important question is: ‘‘How much is enough?’’

These were among the reasons Schroders asked 22,000 people about their pension plans in its Global Investor study. The results paint a clear picture of what people want and how they hope to achieve it.

Investors in the UK told us they should be saving 12.4pc of salary each year – but save only an average of 11.3pc. They would also like to retire at 59.7 years on average.

Among those already retired, the most telling response was that 42pc wished they had saved more.

With this in mind, those working today seem increasingly to understand the need to save for themselves. The Global Investor study study found the average investor only expects 29pc of retirement income to come from a company pension scheme, roughly the same as they expect to fund from their investments and private pensions.

This returns us to the key question: how much do you save?

It is a difficult question to answer accurately as it involves estimating factors you can’t predict, such as future investment returns and how long you might live. But based on a range of assumptions we can get a good indication.

Our analysis suggests someone who started saving for retirement at 30 may need to make annual contributions of 15pc or more to retire on 50pc of their salary. We’re in an age of low rates and low returns so the earlier you start, the better.

What you can do is take charge – make a commitment to save as much as you can and speak to an independent financial adviser about your own situation.

Please remember past performance is not a guide to future performance and may not be repeated. The value of investments and the income from them may go down as well as up and investors may not get back the amounts originally invested.
