Ross: Phoebe, you can't get out of this! Okay? You have to learn how to ride a bike!

Phoebe: Why? Why do I have to learn?

Ross: Well…In-in case of emergency.

Phoebe: What kind of an emergency?

Ross: Well let there's hat if a man comes along and puts a gun to your head and says, "You ride this bike or I'll shoot you."

Phoebe, you can’t get out of this! Okay? You have to learn how to ride a bike!(Phoebe,你不能逃避! Don't you dare try and get out of the washing!(你敢逃避洗碗试试!)

说到get out of,口语中给我印象最深刻的就是:Get out of here.(别胡扯啦!) Get out of here!1 won't have you kids playing in my yard!(快给我吐去!

该条习语与Go on(with you). The boss offered me a thousand dollars for the iob!(老板说啦,干这份活我能得到一千美元的薪水。) Get outa here.Nobody would pay that much money for a simplejob like that!(别胡扯啦!

A:I've never revealed this to anyone before, but actually I'm President Bush's nephew.
B:Get out of here.You don't expect me to belie,ve that,do you?

A:Do you know why Columbus left Spain to go to America?
B:No,why?
A:Because when he told Queen Isabella that the world was round, she said,“Get outa here!” (因为当他向伊莎贝拉女王讲地球是圆的之后,女王说:“快从这里出去!”)B:Oh,get outa here!(嘿,别胡扯啦!)。在这一对话中,A所讲的Get out of here!

由get out of让我联想到的另一习语是get out of bed on the wrong side,在口语中用来指情绪不佳、爱发脾气或牢骚满腹。 因此,英语中也有get up on the wrong side of the bed(早晨起床下错了位置)以及get out of bed with the left leg foremost(下床时左脚先落了地)的说法。

在使用该习语的时候,一般习惯是附加this morning或today,有时加that day等。例如:What's the matter with you?No one seems to be able to do anything right for you.You must have got out of bed on the wrong side this morning.(你今天怎么啦? I’m sorry I snapped ac you.I guess I got out ofbed on the wrong side this morning.(真对不起我冲你吼了。

Get out of town!
滚蛋!)、Get out ofmy face!(别跟我争了!别惹我!)、get out ofline(任意而为)、get out ofhand(失控)、get out ofthe rut(打破常规)等等。

Gary: So, can I get some candy?

Chandler: I am sorry, but some of us have to get up early and go to work! (Monica looks at him) (To Monica) He does not know that I am not some of us.

Monica: Umm, listen I am sorry, but I'll put some out first thing in the morning.

Gary: Well okay, I'll swing by later. Do you live in this building?

Monica: Um-hmm.

其实在美国口语中Swing by还比较常见,相当于pass by或stop in表示“顺道过来”。

送我上大学时,父亲告诉我从今以后我要学会get into the swing of things(适应环境)。 I enjoyed my new life in America, but somehow I just couldn't seem to get into the swing of things.(我喜欢我在美国的新生活,但是,不知为什么,似乎总有不能适应环境的感觉。) New employees are usually allowed a few months to get into the swing of things before they are given any serious responsibilities.

如果你正处于“正在适应”的状态就可以用be in the swing ofthings来表达。例如:I needn't have worried about my new Iife at university.I was in the swing ofthings before I knew it.(我对学校的新生活有过不必要的忧虑。 当然你也可用其他名词代替things:I had difficulty getting into the swing of 1ifc in Affica.(我费了好大的劲才适应了非洲生活。)

有时说be going(at)full swing同义。 By the time we arrived, the party was in (was going at)full swing.(我们到达的时候,聚会正在高潮。)China and America have started a new cultural exchange program, but it won't bc in full swing until next year.(中国和美国开始执行一个新的文化交流计划,但是明年才能步入正轨。)

Business won't get into full swing until next month when the new president has been selected.(在下月选出新董事长之前,公司的营业是不会全面展开
的。)
