China's National Development and Reform Commission has unveiled a long-awaited tiered natural gas pricing plan. The plan is divided into three categories by usage.

The basic price will be based on average monthly natural gas usage. Eighty percent of China's residents are expected to pay the first and lowest tier price.

The second tier is around 1.2 times as costly and covers the 15 percent of residents who use more gas.

The remaining five percent that use the most gas would pay the most, about 1.5 as much as those in the first tier.

Low income familes will receive financial aid to keep their living standards.
