老外跟你说“ping”或“pang”可跟“乒乓”没有关系！千万别误会了！

之前小编和大家介绍过一个英语表达“XING”。这个看起来有一点像拼音的表达，其实是地道的英语。“XING”是“crossing”的缩写，意思是道路的交叉路口。

 其实，英语中还有很多写法和中文拼音一样的单词。我们很容易受到母语影响，第一反应把它代入汉语拼音。比如我们今天要和大家聊一聊的表达。

前两天，外教发消息说“I will ping you”。这个“ping”在这里是什么意思呢？

ping [pɪŋ]

名词：

a short, sharp sound
乒乓的声响，砰的声响

动词：

to make a short, sharp sound
乒乓作响，发出砰的响声

We heard a small stone ping against our window.
我们听到一颗小石子砰的一声砸在我们的窗户上。

to send an email or text message
发送邮件；发送短信

Ping me an email.
给我发邮件

所以，“I will ping you”是“我会给你发消息”的意思。此外，发消息还可以说“text”，名词或动词都可以。

I'll send you a text as soon as I have any news.
我一得到任何消息，就立刻给你发短信。

I texted her to arrange a time to meet.
我给她发了短信，和她约好见面时间。

还有一个和“ping”看起来有点像的“pin”，虽然只有3个字母，但是它也有很多不同的意思。

名词：

英文释义1：a thin piece of metal

Doctors inserted a metal pin in his leg to hold the bones together.
医生们把一根钢针钉进他腿里把骨头固定住。

爷爷现在年纪很大了，走路有点不稳。

此外，“pin”在国际象棋中还有“牵制”或“困子”的意思。这是特殊的一步，移动后阻止另一方移动棋子，因为移动棋子会使另一个更重要的棋子有危险。

That nasty pin stopped me from moving my knight.
这步讨厌的牵制，使我无法移动我的马。

再来补充一些相关的俚语表达：

pin your hopes on sth/sb 把希望寄托在…上

pin back your ears 倾听，仔细听

pin sth on sb 把…归咎于（尤指无辜者）

You can't pin the blame on her - she wasn't even there when the accident happened.
你不能把责任推到她身上——事故发生时她根本不在现场。

pin sth down 清楚地知道；确认

We can't pin down where the leak came from.
我们无法确定哪里发生了泄漏。

而大写的“PIN”是“Personal identification number”的缩写，它是“银行卡密码”的意思。也可以译为“用户个人识别码”，常和number连用。PIN number通常是由一串数字组成，多指在提取现金或办理银行业务时，需要在数字键盘上输入的个人账户密码。

看到“pang”，很多人可能会想到“胖”，但它的意思是“一阵剧痛；（尤指）悲痛”。

We hadn't eaten since yesterday and the hunger pangs were getting harder to ignore.
我们从昨天起一直没有吃东西，饥饿引起的阵阵胃疼越来越难以忍受了。

看到“ping”又看到“pang”，难免会让人想到我们的国球“乒乓球”。但是“乒乓球”正确的英语表达是“Ping-Pong”。
