Hello, I'm Chris Barrow with the BBC News.

Houthi rebels in Yemen have carried out a drone attack on one of the government's most important military bases, killing at least five soldiers. Our Middle East analyst Alan Johnston reports.

The Houthi rebels targeted the Al Anad Air Base in the southern province of Lahj where a military parade was being held. The attack appears to be aimed to the viewing podium and senior army commanders. Several are reported to be among the injured. The Houthi's and Yemen's governments which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition have been at war for around four years. They recently agreed to implement cease fires in certain areas, but the southern Lahj region wasn't one of them.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has insisted there's no contradiction between America's plan to withdraw from Syria and its continued commitment to fight against the Islamic State group. Speaking during a visit to Egypt, Mr. Pompeo said that although US troops would be pulled out, the effort to crush IS would not stop.

The United States under President Trump will remain a steadfast partner in the region for Egypt and others. We urge every country to take meaningful action to crush terrorism and denounce its ideological roots. You'll not fight these battles alone. Our robust battle against ISIS, al-Qaida, and other terrorist groups will continue.

Later in the day, he's expected to make a major speech spelling out Washington's policy in the Middle East. President Trump's surprise announcement last month of the pullout from Syria left many wondering about America's commitment to the region.

Four men have gone on trial in the German capital Berlin, accused of stealing a giant gold coin worth more than four million dollars in March, 2017. Prosecutors say they got into the Bode Museum from the adjacent elevated railway with help from a security guard. They took the coin out the same way, running it along the track before dropping it into a park on the other side of the River Spree and abseiling down to get away. From Berlin. Jenny Hill reports.

Prosecutors believed the men used a ladder to get into the Bode Museum and smashed through bulletproof glass to take that prize, a giant twenty-four karat gold coin made in Canada and known as the Big Maple Leaf. What was for a time officially recognized as the largest coin in the world, it's thought to have been cut into pieces or melted down and sold.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro is due to be sworn in for a second term in a few hours' time. The inauguration is taking place before the Highest Court of Law, not the National Assembly, because it's been stripped of its power by the pro-government Constituent Assembly. The security forces have blocked off several areas of the capital Caracas ahead of the re-inauguration.
